Kalibo, Aklan — April 23, 2026. The Diocese of Kalibo welcomed its new shepherd as Cyril “Jojo” Buhayan Villareal was solemnly ordained and canonically installed as bishop, marking a new chapter of pastoral leadership for the local Church. The episcopal ordination took place at Kalibo Cathedral, with Archbishop Victor Bendico serving as principal consecrator.
Bishop Villareal, born on March 1, 1974, in Mambusao, Capiz, was appointed by Pope Leo XIV on January 24, 2026, following the retirement of Bishop Jose Corazon Tala-oc. His appointment was widely welcomed across the Philippines and abroad, especially among communities he served during his priestly ministry.
A Shepherd Formed in Capiz, Manila, and Vienna
Before becoming bishop, Villareal built a rich pastoral and academic background. He studied philosophy at Saint Pius X Seminary and completed his theological formation at the University of Santo Tomas, earning both a licentiate in sacred theology and a master’s degree in higher religious studies.
His connection to Austria is especially meaningful: from 2005 to 2010, he served as assistant chaplain to the Filipino Catholic Chaplaincy in Vienna, ministering at the Parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel while completing a master’s degree in moral theology at the University of Vienna.
This period left a lasting impact on the Filipino diaspora in Austria, many of whom remember him as a compassionate pastor and thoughtful teacher.
Vienna’s Filipino Catholic Community Sends a Message of Love and Gratitude
To mark his ordination, the Filipino Catholic Community (FCC) in Vienna posted a heartfelt congratulatory message on its Facebook page, expressing both pride and affection for their former chaplain:
“Congratulations, Bishop Jojo, on your Episcopal Ordination and Canonical Installation in Kalibo!
May the grace of your ordination continue to deepen your calling, and may your installation mark the beginning of a fruitful and faithful ministry among the people entrusted to you. Lead with a gentle heart, a clear mind, and the quiet strength that reflects Christ the Good Shepherd.
Know that your FCC family keeps you in prayer as you shepherd God’s people with love and fidelity.”
Their message reflects the deep bond formed during Bishop Villareal’s years of service in Vienna—years that continue to resonate in the community’s collective memory.
A New Mission in Kalibo
Bishop Villareal assumes leadership as the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Kalibo, bringing with him extensive experience in seminary formation, parish leadership, and diocesan governance. His previous roles include vicar general of the Archdiocese of Capiz, rector of the Immaculate Conception Metropolitan Cathedral, and diocesan administrator.
As he begins his episcopal ministry, the faithful in Kalibo—and the Filipino community in Vienna—look forward with hope, confident that Bishop Jojo will guide his new flock with the same humility, clarity, and pastoral warmth that have marked his priesthood.
